The cultural fallout of 26/11 was not immediately apparent, however, Jugaad, a film by first-time producer Sandiip Kapur, has taken the step of scrapping the promotion of a song sung by a Pakistani artist Adeel.

“Adeel has sung Kise awaaz doon for my movie, but I’ve scrapped the promotion of this song since the Mumbai terror incident,” says Kapur, who had also shot the promotional video with Adeel early last year in Noida alongside the male lead, Manoj Bajpai. He adds, “National sentiments matter more to me.”

The 24-year-old singer from Karachi is shocked. “I really worked hard on this song with the music director, Sachin Gupta. It’s not like I’m responsible for what happened in Mumbai. Bollywood has been my dream,” protests Adeel, who is currently under contract with TIPS and is planning to raise funds from his shows to give for the relief of 26/11 victims. He released his debut album Koi Chehra in India last year, followed by the hit song Move your body in Kismet Konnection. “Music has no boundaries and an artist has no religion. But the producer is entitled to decide what’s best for the film,” says Gupta.

Adeel wasn’t invited for the music launch of Jugaad either, held recently in Mumbai and Delhi. “India is my second home and now the Pakistani media is criticising me for being here,” says Adeel. But Adeel is not the only one incurring losses. Kapur says, “I have already suffered a loss of more than Rs 30 lakh since the video and all other promotion of the song have been scrapped. But I have no regrets.”
