The driver and cleaner were severely beaten up by the activists and were also robbed of Rs 12,000. A police complaint has been filed against the mob for setting the truck on fire.
According to the police, Gorakshak activists of Kamrej received information that a truck (GJ-9Y-8957) carrying cattle was on its way to a slaughterhouse somewhere in Kaodara. After this, a group of about 12 people kept a watch and intercepted the vehicle near Nawagam Police station. They got hold of the driver, Ghiasuddin Mansuri and the cleaner, and beat them up. The two somehow managed to escape from the spot and rushed to the police station for help.
Later, Gorakshak leader Ashwin Chikhalia lodged a complaint against the driver and the cleaner with the Kamrej police. Mansuri, a resident of Zhagadia taluka, also lodged a complaint against Chikhalia and his 11 supporters.
Chikhalia said, "We can't allow cattle slaughter as religious feelings are attached to it. We kept a close watch and caught the truck and freed the cattle. We had informed the police, but they did not turn up. Initially, the police even refused to register a case against the truck driver, and agreed only upon seeing a mob outside the police station. Seeing the police's behaviour, the activists lost their cool and set the truck ablaze."
Sub-Inspector P D Vaghela said, "The cattle were loaded on the truck at Zaghadia and were on the way to deliver it to a party in Kadodara village in Kamrej taluka of Surat. The Gorakshak activists took the law in their own hands and we will take strict action against them. We have launched a search operation for Chikhalia and his supporters, who are from the Bharwad community."
The police later sent the cattle to Panjrapole at Akhakol village.
