Chandigarh, February 1 Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal hardly misses an opportunity to remind officials of the courtesies they need to extend to elected representatives. His advice, however, seems to be falling on deaf ears.

Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Sat Pal Gosain has officially complained to Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon against the Barnala District Transport Officer (DTO) for allegedly misbehaving with him on phone.

The matter has been referred to the Privileges Committee of the Vidhan Sabha. Talking to The Indian Express, the Deputy Speaker alleged that the DTO impounded a truck in Barnala and refused to let it go for days even as the owner was willing to pay the fine. “He used unparliamentary language on phone. The DTO assumed that the connection had got snapped, but it had not,” he said. Gosain said, “I spoke to the DTO several times to let the vehicle go. He only assured me, but did nothing for three days. Punjab Transport Minister Master Mohan Lal had also called him up.”

“After almost three days and a fine of Rs 6,000, the truck was allowed to go,” he said. Transport Minister Master Mohan Lal said, “I had called up the DTO and asked him to charge the fine. The truck was allowed to leave thereafter. On his conversation with the DTO, the minister said the transport officer maintained that he had not intended to hurt the Deputy Speaker and denied any misconduct. “I will inquire into this if the Deputy Speaker has complained about his misbehaviour,” he said.
