Ahmedabad, January 31 Speaking at the 56th convocation address of Gujarat University here on Thursday, Governor Naval Kishore Sharma opined that uniformity in syllabus in higher education, their teaching and examination system was of utmost importance in the globalised and changing world today.

Pleading for radical changes in higher education with a view to improving the quality of education, he said that aim of education was not to increase the number of students with university degrees but to impart quality and value-based education so that students could compete at international level without any hindrance.

Stating that the large population of India was its main strength, he said that the academia must ensure a type of education to them so that the youths of the country could turn into human resources in real sense of the term.

He said, strength of a country did not lie in amassing of arms and ammunition but in human resource development of its youth. Asking to keep pace with changing times, he said that quality and standard of education differed in different universities owing to differences in medium of instructions and curriculum being taught to students.

He said that it was due to this reason that students from Gujarat were not able to get admission in educational institutions in Delhi, Bangalore and other places.

Keeping this in view, he said that it was necessary to have uniform medium of instruction, syllabi and admission policy in all the universities across the country. Unless there was uniformity in higher education, the young generation could not turn into an effective human resource. He also stressed the need for Gujarati youths to improve the knowledge of English language as English has become an international language.
