Gandhinagar, March 5 Gujarat Governor Nawal Kishore Sharma has expressed concern over the alleged 'nefarious activities' at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. The Governor has asked the government to ensure that teams of volunteers are formed to maintain the sanctity and serenity of the Ashram. He added that only tourists and researchers would be permitted to use the Toran Hotel-cum-guest house. He also directed the government to declare the Gandhi Ashram and surrounding areas as a “peace and no demonstration zone.” He also emphasised on the need to encourage research activities and propagation of the ideals and principles of the Mahatma in the area.

The Governor's directive came after a high-level meeting at the Raj Bhavan on Wednesday evening. The meeting was called in wake of media reports that some “undesirable activities” were being conducted in the Gandhi Ashram premises. The reports had also stated that wedding parties were being organised in Toran Hotel, a hotel managed by the Gujarat Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC).
