Gandhinagar, February 29 Governor Nawal Kishore Sharma has convened a high-level meeting at Raj Bhavan on March 5 to discuss measures to check the “nefarious activities” going on at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, and to preserve its sanctity.

Perturbed by the media reports in this regard, Sharma has summoned state tourism minister Jay Narayan Vyas, Minister of State for Home Amit Shah, Principal Secretary (Home) Balwant Singh, Tourism Secretary Atanu Chakravarty, Gandhi Ashram's chairman Shrenik Kasturbhai, Gujarat Vidhyapith's Chancellor Narayanbhai Desai and Ashram's Director Amrutbhai Modi for the meeting.

A Raj Bhavan communiqué on Friday said, “The Governor is pained to read in newspapers that anti-social activities are going on in the Sabarmati Ashram premises and wedding parties being organised in Toran Hotel located near the Ashram damage the sanctity and peaceful environment of the premises, and also disturb national as well as international tourists visiting it.”

The Ashram authorities had recently shot off a letter to the Gujarat Tourism Development Corporation, which manages the hotel. They had protested against the use of the hotel and the guesthouse located across the road passing the Ashram for such activities.

Besides wedding parties, the hotel permits traders' and labour associations to hold meetings there by paying fees.

The hotel and guesthouse are meant to house national and international tourists visiting the Ashram.
