This is the enhanced salary of the Governor after the recent pay hike of President, vice-President and Governors came into effect.
And this is the first time in his four years of tenure as Governor of West Bengal that Gandhi has donated his salary to the CM’s relief fund.
Earlier, the Governor had donated his one month’s salary for some other philanthropic cause. When contacted, Raj Bhavan officials said the Governor was not willing to comment on this issue.
Gandhi has not been on best of terms with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and the Marxists during his stint at the Raj Bhawan.
Be it the March 14 police firing in Nandigram or forcible entry of CPM supporters to some parts of Nandigram on November 10 last year, the Governor had made his displeasure known through statements issued from Raj Bhawan.
Gandhi has also been outspoken in his criticism of the state government over the land acquisition in Singur and on other issues.
The latest spat the Governor had had with the Chief Minister was over the removal of his press secretary Dhruba Basu. While the Information and Culture Department under Bhattacharjee issued transfer orders for Basu, the Governor put his foot down and stalled the move. The state government had no other option than to put the order on hold for an indefinite period of time.
