Kolkata Marking a departure, Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi has recommended three new Vice-Chancellors from the country’s oldest IIT at Kharagpur in the last one year.

In the past, this exercise has usually been political in nature. But this time around, the Governor has set a renewed precedent.

Those recommended include: Professor Shamshul Alam as the V-C of Aliah University, who was the former Head of Department of Mathematics at IIT Kharagpur, Professor Sabyasanchi Sengupta as the V-C of West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT), formerly with the Electrical Engineering Department and K Roy as the V-C of Bengal Engineering and Science University, who was the Director of the School of Medical Science and Technology.

The Governor personally met the three nominated members, which included deputy director of ISI Bharghav Bhattacharya and Swapan Bhattacharya Director of NIT Durgapur.

Analysing the situation in BESU, the Governor found Ray fit for the post of V-C of the 150-year-old university.

“We have spent nearly thirty years at IIT where the academic ambience does not give any scope for lacunae. This is a welcome trend where faculties from the IIT set-up are getting a chance to offer leadership in various universities,” said Shamshul Alam.

Incidentally, the V-Cs of WBUT and Aliah University have already taken drastic steps to reform the educational set-up in their respective universities.

While V-C of Alaih University has already started dual degree programmes in various engineering and management streams and stressed on technical and scientific education for minorities, the V-C of WBUT has taken firm steps to modify the examination system and to stop ragging within the campus premises.
