Chandigarh The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is yet to receive Rs 10 crore as water charges from different organisations, including government departments. In some cases, the bills have been pending for more than a year. In its House Meet on Tuesday, the MC decided to serve a 15-day notice on the defaulters. In case the bills are not paid, the connections are likely to be cut, sources said.

The Water Supply and Sewerage Disposal Committee has been authorised to resolve the grievances of the people pertaining to the issue.

The MC House also saw a heated debate over the issue of recovering the pending bills. The nominated councillors were of the view that while bills worth Rs 10 crore were pending, no action was being taken against the defaulters. Councillor Dr A P Sanwaria said it was criminal negligence to not recover the bill. “A number of government departments are major defaulters. While the connections of the residents are cut off without hesitation, here the bills are not being recovered for years. Some strict action is required,” he said.

The councillors were of the opinion that the connections should be cut beginning with the organisation with the largest pending bill. All councillors would be given a list of defaulters with the amount pending against each.
