Chandigarh In an effort to deal with the staff shortage in city hospitals, the authorities have decided to pool their available infrastructure and expertise under the synchronisation of services programme.

Under the programme, three city hospitals — Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) Sector 32 and Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH) Sector 16 — will share faculty expertise with each other.

The Administration has approved that Urologist Dr Vidur Bhalla from GMSH-16, would now attend to patients at the hospital in Sector 32 twice a week.

The Government Medical College Hospital did not have an expert urologist after its sole faculty Dr G S Bawa left a few years ago.

At the Sector-16 hospital, Dr Sukanaya Mitra of GMCH-32 would provide technical support for establishing an Intensive Care Unit.

“Sometimes, hospitals have the requisite infrastructure but appointments take a lot of time due to administrative reasons or because experts are extremely hard to find. Sharing of expertise is a prudent step and is certain to benefit the patients,” said a Sector-32 doctor.

While the Administration had earlier made plans for the upgrade of Sector-16 hospital, it is still to find experts in most of the super-specialties, which were to be added to the hospital.

The PGI had conducted training in cardiac anesthesia for the senior residents of GMCH earlier this week as part of the synchronisation programme.
