Kolkata Even though the state government has requested the Central government to set up a dedicated unit of the NSG in Kolkata, it is also stressing on the need to strengthen the state police force to tackle a situation similar to the November 26 Mumbai attack.

“It is the local police which is supposed to first face the heat in case of a terror attack. Help from other agencies, be it Army, the NSG or the para-military force, comes later. But it is the state police response team which should be strengthened and motivated because they are better aware of the ground situation,” a top police senior said.

In fact strengthening the local response team will be part of the action plan that the state government is preparing to handle a Mumbai-like situation. Broadly, the action plan consists of three things — gathering intelligence, investigation and launching an offensive against a possible wrong doer.
