Ludhiana, February 4 Cabinet Minister Bikram Singh Majithia today said that the state government has embarked upon a plan to augment more than 1,500 MW of electricity from different sectors of renewable energy, viz. small/micro hydel, biomass power projects, co-generation, waste to energy and solar thermal power generation projects.

Interacting with mediapersons at the residence of Deputy Speaker Lok Sabha Charanjit Singh Atwal, Majithia said that Punjab government will exploit all sources of natural energy to tide over the power crisis being faced by the state. He added that he will seek cooperation of the union ministry for getting funds for these projects, and also invite various companies to participate in this sector.

Emphasizing the need for educating the public regarding energy conservation, he informed that Punjab Energy Development Authority (PEDA) was launching a special multimedia campaign to educate public regarding eco-friendly, energy saving technologies.

Majithia said that directions have been given to the officers of various programmes to prepare a bar chart for close monitoring of the implementation schedule of their respective projects to ensure timely completion. He informed that steps have been taken for the better coordination amongst various departments of the State for speedy clearances, such as Power Purchase Agreement, Land lease Agreement and Environmental Clearances, so that project implementation can be done at fast pace.

The minister highlighted that meetings with the Local Government Department and PWD are also being arranged to replace inefficient fixture with CFL and efficient tubelights, to achieve energy efficiency in government offices and street lighting.

He said that energy data of 47 government buildings have been collected which are being analyzed. Some of these buildings will be taken up as demo projects in the current year energy conservation action plan.

Majithia said that the Union government has conceded the request of the state government for sanctioning adequate financial concessions for the generation of solar power. He said that he was going to Delhi to meet the union minister for non-conventional energy resources, and will urge him to extend more assistance for the exploitation of natural energy resources.

Charanjit Singh Atwal said he will also take up the matter with the concerned union ministry, for clearing all such proposals sent by state government.
