Kolkata The state government will pay 10 per cent as interest amount to those employees whose gratuity payment has been delayed. Advocate General Bolai Roy told the Calcutta High Court during a hearing on a petition of delayed payment of gratuity. He said the state government employees don’t require to come to the court for interest if the gratuity was not paid in due time.

Thousands of state government employees had filed petitions in the High Court seeking order for payment of interest due to the delayed payment of their gratuity.

The Calcutta High Court had passed orders on several occasions directing the state government to pay interest for delayed payment.

On Thursday, Roy said the state government would pay interest on its own for the delayed payment of gratuity. The state government decided to pay interest to avoid litigation, said an official of the legal department.
