In its July 2008 order, the HC had banned the existing autos from running in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area after December 31,2008 and directed the state government to convert the autos to four-stroke LPG mode. The government approached the HC on January 9 seeking an extension of the time limit for conversion of autos up to July 31.
Subsequently, the court asked the government to place an action taken report on the steps it had taken to implement the order.
A source in the state Transport Department said nearly 700 autos have been converted to four-stroke LPG mode since January 2009. The source added that the transport department had requested the auto manufacturing companies to expedite the conversion of existing autos into four-stroke LPG mode.
The department was also facing problems setting up LPG outlets at petrol pumps in accordance with guidelines framed by the oil companies.
The department has also been holding discussion with oil companies for increasing the number of LPG outlets in the cities. According to the state government, there are 15 LPG fuelling centres in Kolkata. During the last hearing on January 9, Advocate-General Bolai Roy said the state government had prepared a scheme for the conversion of existing autos and nearly about 12,000 auto owners had showed interest in it.
