Kolkata The state government will seek a legal opinion on what to do with the 47 unidentified bodies of Jnaneswari train derailment incident that are currently lying in morgues of three medical college hospitals of Kolkata — Calcutta Medical College, SSKM College and NRS Medical College.

“To identify the bodies, we have sent the samples for DNA tests. But at the same time, disposing the decomposed bodies at the earliest is a prime requisite. So considering the gravity of the situation we are going to seek a legal opinion on whether the bodies can be disposed of even before the results of the DNA tests are available to us,” Home Secretary Samar Ghosh said on Tuesday.

On Monday, Principal Secretary (Health) Manabendranath Roy had written a letter to Ghosh seeking directions on what the hospitals should do with the bodies.

“As the bodies have decomposed, they are creating foul stench in the densely populated areas surrounding the morgues. Please let us know what to do with them as time is running out,” Roy, who attached letters of the medical superintendents of the three medical colleges, wrote in his letter to Ghosh.
