Ahmedabad Of 750 AMTS buses, only 170 have got the facility; control room yet to get functional

The state-of-the-art Global Positioning System (GPS), which was installed in the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Services (AMTS) buses in November 2008, is yet to become fully functional and help the commuters.

Of the 750 buses that were going to get the GPS, only 170 buses have so far been equipped with the GPS. The control room that was going to be set up at the AMTS office has not started.

Sources said the control room is still to come up and that the operators needed for the job have not been recruited. The control room is temporarily generating reports.

Transport chairman Pravin Patel said: “The control room’s work is on. We are regularly getting reports on drivers and the bus routes. We also have a check on the passengers, tickets and stoppages of the bus.”

The AMTS has not yet taken any action on the reports. The speed limit of the buses still remains an issue to be resolved by the AMTS.

Even during the introduction of GPS, neither the speed limit of the buses was fixed nor have speed control metres were installed.

Patel said: “We are monitoring the visuals of rash driving, but we have not taken any action as yet. The drivers also need some time to get used to the new system. In fact, the control room is yet to function the way it has been planned.” The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) claims of the revamp of the AMTS buses are still going on with the latest development linking the AMTS with the BRT network. But the commuters continue to witness the same problems with the AMTS buses.

When asked, commuters at bus stops and bus depots had opined that the AMC should stop introducing newer technology in AMTS buses and should instead introduce more vehicles.

GPS ON BUSES by Niranjan on 08 Feb 2009

OUR LEADERS ARE ALWAYS VERY HAPPY TO TELL US THAT A NEW, STATE OF THE ART SYSTEM OF SOME KIND OR THE OTHER HAS BEEN PLANNED. EVEN AFTER THEY ACTUALLY GET IT, IT TAKES A LONG TIME FOR IT TO WORK. IN ADDITION, WHAT DOES A GPS SYSTEM DO. IT TELLS THE DRIVER TO TURN LEFT OR RIGHT AT THE NEXT INTERSECTION, WHICH HE SHOULD ALREADY KNOW TO BE A BUS DRIVER? ALSO, IT TELLS THE DEPOT SUPERVISOR THAT THE BUS IS STUCK IN A TRAFFIC JAM AT SUCH AND SUCH ROAD. HOW DOES IT HELP THE FUNCTIONING OF THE CITY TRANSPORT SYSTEM? WHAT A WASTE OF GOOD PUBLIC MONEY!!!
