‘Gramin Olympic Sports’ meet from Feb 12 to 15

Lucknow The UP Non-Olympic Association will be organising the ‘Gramin Khel Mahotsav’ from February 12 to 15 at a mini stadium, in Juggaur village near Chinhat, Lucknow. Competitions in traditional sports will be organised during the four-day meet.

According to the organising committee members, about 500 to 600 participants from different states of India including Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Goa besides hosts Uttar Pradesh are expected to take part in the meet.

A very peculiar feature about this ‘Olympics’ or rather ‘non-Olympics’ is that besides organisation of competitions in traditional sports like Bailgadi race, Gramin dangal and Gulli danda, some interesting events like Milking the cow, Drawing water from the well, Eit phekhna, Putting sacks laden with material on trolleys will be organised during these games. Competitions in traditional arts of Uttar Pradesh like Chikankari and Kulhar-making will also be held. Going by the schedule of events, it is likely to be an entertaining affair. The event aims at the promotion of cultural intermingling among the village folk through these competitions.

Harbhajan Singh, secretary medical education will be the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony which will take place at 10.00 am on Thursday. Chandra Prakash (IPS) will be the special guest on the occasion.

Veteran athletics
The 30th National Veteran Championship will be organised at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium, Lucknow from February 12 to 14. The tournament will be inaugurated by Culture Mininster Subhash Pandey at 10.00 am on Thursday.
