Karamanlis was staying at Maurya Sheraton. Early in the morning, he visited the Rastrapati Bhavan for a formal reception and then headed to Raj Ghat. This led to traffic snarls at peak hours at Dhaula Kuan, India Gate, Bhairon Road and Mathura Road.
Police blocked the road leading to Raj Ghat at around 10 am as Karamanlis was to lay a wreath at the memorial half an hour later, leading to traffic problems on Nizamuddin bridge which connects eastern parts of the Capital with Lutyens Delhi.
People were caught in a jam on the bridge for hours even after restrictions were lifted, a senior police officer said. "From my house in Patparganj it takes 30 minutes to reach ITO, but today it took me nearly two hours," Ramesh Nair, a commuter said.
