Vadodra With pollutants eating up state’s groundwater and land resources, environmentalists are waiting for a report by the Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC). It had prepared a list of 20 critically polluted talukas in 2001, after the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) asked it to prepare a feasibility report every five years.

However, the GEC officials admit that apart from the status of nine sectors prepared in 2005, they are yet to come up with taluka-wise report of the pollutants, which would explain the spread or the decrease of contamination in groundwater and other natural resources.

“We are preparing the taluka wise report. But it would take some time,” said Director of Gujarat Ecology Commission C H Pandya. “However, in 2005, we prepared a report on the sectoral basis after dividing the state into nine sectors to see the conditions of the land and water resources, which was submitted to the ministry.”

On the other hand, Vadodara-based environmental activist Rohit Prajapati said despite clear instructions from MoEF and the Supreme Court, the new report is yet to be tabled by the agency. “In some of the regions, the lands and the waterbodies, which were not contaminated, now have pollutants in it with water rapidly changing colours.”
