Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Fakirbhai Vaghela said the project was sanctioned in response to a proposal sent by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The houses will come up in Asarwa, Naroda, Odhav, Girdharnagar and Narol areas of the city.
“We have also asked other civic bodies across the state to send a similar proposal to the government. My department will positively consider such a proposal and allocate adequate funds,” Vaghela told Newsline.
Under the project sanctioned for the AMC, the State Safai Kamdar Vikas Nigam will provide a subsidy of Rs 40,000 and an interest-free loan of Rs 60,000 to each of the beneficiaries.
The AMC will be allocated Rs 10.24 crore in the first instalment. The corporation will also give Rs 40,000 as assistance to each of the beneficiaries.
The minister said the three-storey apartments will be earthquake proof and each flat will have two rooms, a kitchen, lavatory and bathroom and an open gallery.
Chief Minister Narendra Modi had announced a similar housing project in April 2007.
