“We are actively considering the creation of a special cadre of marine commandos to be deployed along the 1,600-km long coastline,” Khandwawala told PTI, adding that the new cadre may be created after the Lok Sabha polls.
He said the personnel will be selected from the state police force and they will be specially trained for coastal security.
The commandos will be equipped with the state-of-the-art weapons and gadgets, he added.
When asked whether this special cadre will be separate from the existing marine police stations, he replied in the affirmative and said that the force’s exclusive mandate will be to protect the coastal areas.
It may be noted that the state government has created 10 marine police stations along the coast with Central help. Speedboats and other equipment will be provided to these stations.
