“As of now, we have arrested 10 persons involved in the racket. Chandi Karmakar is the kingpin of the racket. He owns a gun shop in Purulia. He used to make fake licences for those interested in joining private security agencies in exchange for a few thousand rupees,” said Annuj Sharma, special IG, CID.
“He used to get fake licences made in Purulia, but the licenses bore imprint of several far-flung places, including Bhagalpur, Munger, Patna and interior areas of Nagaland and Manipur. It was deliberately done as the verification of the licences from these areas is difficult for the police,” he said.
The CID team has sealed the computer Karmakar used and recovered more than 80 fake licences from his residence. Significantly, senior CID officials are not yet sure if the guns they have recovered are fake. “For checking the seized guns, we will take help from arms experts,” said a senior CID official.
