Chandigarh A UT Police constable was arrested on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in the violent attack on the police and the enforcement staff of the Chandigarh Administration during a demolition drive at Gurdwara Satsang Sahib in Sector 38 (West) on January 30.

The police said the role of Ranbir Singh was established during the questioning of Jatinder Singh of Dadumajra Colony, who was arrested on Tuesday. Jatinder told the probing officers that Ranbir had called people to come to the gurdwara on that day and instigated them to resort to violence to stop the enforcement staff from carrying out the demolition drive. He has been booked on charges of attempt to murder, rioting and causing hurt. The attack had left many, including the additional deputy commissioner, injured.

The investigators also saw the constable in the video recordings of the incident and found him supporting the protestors who had attacked the police. The accused is posted in Sector 7.

The police said the name of gurdwara management committee chairman Baba Sarup Singh’s brother-in-law had also emerged during the probe and that they were on the lookout of him and his sons.

Efforts are meanwhile on to trace Sarup Singh too and the police have sounded an alert at all seaports and airports to prevent him from going aboard.

A delegation of the gurdwara representatives, meanwhile, met the UT home secretary in connection with the disputed structure. The home secretary asked the management committee of the gurdwara to demolish the illegal structure on its own and set an example for the others.
