Gurgaon Five members of a gang were convicted and sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment on Tuesday in a case of robbery and attempted murder. A fine of Rs 5,000 was also imposed on each of them.

The convicts, Pramod alias Bhattan, Rohtas, Budhram, Ravi and Mukesh are all residents of Bhondakala village in Gurgaon. They were part of the gang that has confessed to serial killings along the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway.

According to the police, the gang was active in areas like IFFCO Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk and IMT Manesar.

They picked up unsuspecting victims from these spots in Maxicabs. Three or four gang members would be seated in the cabs and the victims would think them to be passengers.

The driver would take the car to a secluded spot and strangulate the victim while the gang looted valuables and dumped the body in a drain or behind bushes.

According to inspector Sanjeev Balara, four members — Rohtas, Lalit, Pramod and Ravi — were arrested after an intensive operation on November 6, 2006.

During interrogation, they revealed the names of their associates Vikram alias Vicky, Budhram and Dalchand who were subsequently arrested.

The gang had been charged with 20 murders and a separate case of robbery and an attempt to murder case in Gurgaon.

The police had arrested the members of gang and booked them under Sections 395 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code for robbery and attempt to murder at the Sector 56 police station after they beat up and robbed a person of Rs 40,000.

The 20 cases (relating to the murders) are under trial.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) C B Sorain said in the order that if the accused are unable to pay the fine amount, they would have to serve another two years of imprisonment.
