Chandigarh, February 1 It was an unfortunate day for Chandigarh players as they failed to win even a single title in the boys and girls categories in the AITA Championship Series which concluded at Lake Sports complex on Friday.

Top seed Navneet Kumar of Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Academy was shown the door by Gurinder Singh of Punjab who achieved straight sets 6-4, 6-4 win in the boys’ under-16 final. Navneet Kumar who originally hails from Allahabad, looked out of sorts today and committed a number of unforced errors. Things started happening for Gurinder Singh after the first six games as he won the first set 6-4. In the second set too, Gurinder was brilliant and efficient not allowing Navneet Kumar a single break-point. Gurinder picked his game after the fifth game grabbing crucial points as he took the second set with an identical score of 6-4. Navneet could not reproduce his blistering semi-final form, but still played well to reduce the margin.

In the boys’ under-14 singles final, fourth seed Vilash Khate ended the challenge of Chandigarh’s Digvijay Singh Naruka as Khate rallied to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Naruka to emerge as boys’ under-14 champion. Khate, who is a trainee at National Tennis Academy, dominated the proceedings right from the start as he won the first set 6-3. He was in supreme form in the second set as he powered a 5-2 lead before taking the final set 6-2.

In the girls’ under-16 finals, Ravnoor Kaur's fine run in the championship was halted by Eetee Mehta of Gujarat as Mehta sailed past Kaur 6-1, 6-2. Earlier, Ravnoor Kaur, a student of Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, had upset second seed Baljinder Kaur of Haryana in semis, eighth seed Jaspreet Kaur in quarter-finals and fourth seed Ikttesh Chahal of Chandigarh in second round.

Eetee, however, failed to complete a golden double as top seed Likhita Shetty of Karnataka defeated Eetee in three sets in the girls’ under-14 final.

The match saw an equal display of aggressive stroke play in the first two sets before Shetty sealed the match, winning the third set 6-1.

Pradeep Mehra, adviser to the Chandigarh administrator distributed the prizes to the winners.
