Chandigarh, March 1 Rare weapons of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, reached Chandigarh late in the evening in a massive procession. Thousands of devotees queued up along the route to catch a glimpse of the glass-encased carriage with the weapons.

Fireworks lit up the sky as the procession entered the city at the Transport Chowk. On Sunday, a procession will be taken out in the city. It will start from the Sector-8 gurdwara around 8 am and culminate at the Sector 34 gurdwara around 8 pm.

A kirtan darbar will be held at the ground opposite the Sector 34 gurdwara late on Sunday evening. UT Governor SF Rodrigues will be the chief guest for the occasion.

The nagar kirtan is being held on account of the completion of 300 years of the Guru Gaddi Divas of the Guru Granth Sahib.

It is for the first time that the rare weapons, which are said to be 300 years old, have been taken out from the Hazoor Sahib Gurdwara in Maharashtra for display.

“The nagar kirtan started from Hazoor Sahib in Maharashtra and passed through Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, Pinjore and Panchkula. The procession will pass through Sector 7,19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 15, 38, 40, 37, 36, 35,” said MPS Chawla, one of the organisers and a nominated councillor.

He said flowers will be showered on the procession from helicopters as many as four times.

“It will first happen towards the beginning of the procession around 8 am. Then near Sector 19, 21 and Sector 37. Fireworks, a laser show and gatka show will be organised at the Sector 34 gurdwara. There will be arrangement of langar for around one lakh people,” said Chawla.

The nagar kirtan is expected to be one of the biggest of its kind with around 500 cars, 32 horses, 11 camels, 11 jeeps and 200 motorcycles. Around 500 traffic police officers have been deployed to man traffic.

On Monday, the nagar kirtan will leave for SAS Nagar.
