Chandigarh, February 5 A ‘live operative’ workshop was held in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), here today to demonstrate vaginal reconstructive surgery for genital prolapse and associated conditions like stress urinary incontinence.

Experts said genital prolapse was a very common gynaecological problem. Another very common and frequently under-estimated problem in women, which was discussed at the workshop, was stress incontinence of urine, which may or may not be accompanied by prolapse.

“This symptom is reported by women as leakage of urine during coughing or sneezing. Majority of the Indian women is reluctant to express their urinary problems and are not aware of availability of specialized services. This should change in this era of women’s empowerment,” said the medical medical experts.

Two experts from Netherlands, Dr J P W R Roover and Dr V D Vaart conducted vaginal surgeries on women with cystocele, vault prolapse and stress urinary incontinence and demonstrate the use of synthetic mesh and tape. These surgeries were simultaneously demonstrated to all the participants in the workshop. This workshop was attended by 150-200 gynecologists from north India.
