“He is in a solitary cell where we keep high security prisoners and he is being watched round the clock with cameras. He requested for vegetarian food and we served him rice, roti and a vegetarian dish — all part of normal jail food. Mineral water was made available to him after his family deposited the money at the jail office,” said a senior officer of Alipore jail.
Like other inmates, Agarwal was given thick sheets and blankets even as he expressed a desire to get blankets and pillows from home.
After being convicted for life, Agarwal was on Friday evening put up in the ‘Amdani Ward’ of the Alipore jail along with over 100 inmates. He spent the night with them before being shifted to the special cell on Saturday morning.
“As we feared that other inmates could demand money from him, he was moved to the solitary cell. When we took him to the room, he behaved well with us and was not tense,” said a jail official.
On Saturday, till last reports came in, none of his family members had come to meet him. This, despite officers informing Agarwal that according to jail code, his relatives could provide him with dry food and fruits.
“But he told us that he has no need for such food now. On Saturday, he ate the usual jail meal,” said another jail official, adding that Agarwal is fit and has shown no signs of illness.
