Hallelujah, it is Europe

The Capital City Minstrels (CCM), Delhi’s oldest choir, is on song and not just because Easter is around the corner. They are thinking up a set list for a European tour, probably a first for a choir from the Capital. But before they sing hallelujah through France, Germany and Hungary in June, they will be performing with Remscheider Vokalensemble (RVE), a choral group from Dusseldorf, Germany, at the Max Mueller Bhavan and the India Habitat Centre on March 17 and 19.

Their performances this month will have a wonderful mélange — from bhajans like Raghupati Raghav raja Ram to Latin Gloria and Spanish Hava Nagila besides jaunty Hungarian numbers — and they are planning to repeat this mix of European languages, English and Hindi in the churches and community centres of Budapest, Dusseldorf and Paris. Sujatha Kumar, 35, who has been an alto in the CCM for the past 10 years, says: “If a foreign choir were to sing in Hindi, I’d be curious. I hope Europeans feel the same way about an Indian choir singing in their language and clap all through.”

The foreign collaborations, especially with RVE, happened, thanks to the German singers in the 50-member choir. “It will be interesting to collaborate with RVE since its repertoire is classical, with Schubert, Bach and Mozart, while ours is a secular mix that has the tabla, sitar and the piano,” says Kumar. For now, the singers are pooling in for the tickets to Eurostar, and keeping the fingers crossed for more sponsorship.
