Considered to be a gift from the Akalis to the area, this stadium has been constructed by the Punjab Urban Development Authority with not even a single penny from the state government.
A grant of Rs 1 crore was given by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and rest of the money, Rs 3.5 crore, was spent by the PUDA. The work on this indoor stadium, which formed part of election manifestos, had come to a standstill during the previous Congress regime.
A half-constructed structure stood out as an eyesore for nearly two decades. Completed at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore, the stadium stands on 12.5 acres that were donated to Moga Municipal Council by Mehal Singh, a local, and can seat about 4,000 people.
In his inaugural address, Badal said, "Charges of this stadium will be fixed by the Sports Department. And to further enhance the facilities in this area, the state government is constructing a 400-m track and will also provide an astroturf."
Apart from this, Badal also laid the foundation stone of an outdoor stadium and a community centre that will cost the state government Rs 7.5 crore.
Doling out sops, Badal announced a 'sairgah' for the morning and evening walkers and construction of a ring road near Bhagapurana, which would connect the city with Amritsar and Ferozepur. Commenting on the demand of giving city the corporation status, the CM said the decision would be taken up soon in the Assembly.
