Lal Singh (55), a poor farmer in Chandranagar village under the Gajner police station, died after he consumed poison on Tuesday night.
His son said Lal took the step after local moneylenders warned him of taking away his land if he did not pay back his loan.
The police have sent the body for postmortem, though no case had been registered till late evening.
Jagdish Kumar, Lal’s son, said his father owned only four and a half bighas of land, which was not sufficient to feed their family of ten.
“My father took loan from local moneylen-ders to marry off three of my sisters. He could not return the money,” he said.
Jagdish said local moneylenders often humiliated his father and said they would take away his land if he did not pay up.
On Tuesday night, Jagdish said, Lal consumed some poisonous substance and died on way to hospital.
The Gajner police said they would take action against the moneylenders if Lal’s family members registered a complaint.
