Hardeep establishes new record

Lucknow Punjab's Hardeep Kaur hogged the limelight on the second day of the 57th All India Police Athletics Meet at the Athletic Stadium of 35th Bn PAC, here. She shattered a 10-year-mark in the hammer throw event. Kaur cleared a distance of 57.05m to better Phool Patti's mark of 53.52 set in 1999. Bihar's Archna Bara who bettered the mark had to be content with the silver.

The competition sizzled with the heat here as Uttar Pradesh continued to put up a good show by taking their medal tally to an impressive eight which includes four golds, 3 silvers and a bronze. Punjab were at a close second with four golds, 1 silver and five bronze.

Uttar Pradesh's Rakesh Kumar clinched a gold in the hammer throw event with a throw of 62.87 metres followed by teammate Ashish Kumar Singh (61.47m).

Gurmeet Singh led the Punjab medal rush by winning gold in the 20 km metre walk, the first event of the day.

With a time of 1:30.57 seconds, he pushed BSF duo of Anil Kumar and Santa Singh to the second and third positions, respectively.

The Results: 400m race (men): 1st Ajay Kumar (BSF), 2nd Vinay Kumar Chaudhary (UP), 3rd Rupesh Thakur (MP);

400m race (women): 1st Saraswati Chand (Ori), 2nd Sapinder Kaur (Pun), 3rd Sukumati Laguri (Ori);

20m walk (men): 1st Gurmeet Singh (Pun), 2nd Anil Kumar (BSF), 3rd Santa Singh (BSF);

1500m race (women): 1st Wahida Rehman, 2nd S Thobatone Chanu (CRPF), 3rd Geeta Rai (UP);

Hammer throw (women): 1st Hardeep Kaur (Pun; 57.05m; NMR), 2nd Archna Bara (Bihar; 57.73m; BMR), 3rd Phool Pati (CRPF);

Pole vault (men): 1st Sunder Singh (BSF), 2nd Shamsher Singh (CRPF), 3rd Satpal Singh (Pun);

Hammer throw(men): 1st Rakesh Kumar (UPP), 2nd Ashish Kumar Singh (UPP), 3rd Harpal Singh (Punjab).

Bridge tourney
THE 35th All India Electricity Board Bridge Tournament commenced at Oudh Gymkhana Club, Lucknow from on Wednesday. About 14 teams will be taking part in the tournament. The tournament is being organised by Uttar Pradesh Power Sector Sports Control Board. The event was inaugurated by Alok Tandon (IAS).
