It was early 2000; Ranvir Shorey was just another funky Channel [V] VJ doubling up behind the camera for the small screen. Sometime later, when he tried his luck in films with a blink-and-miss role in the forgettable Ek Chhoti Si Love Story, he went unnoticed. But some people are meant to go a long way and Shorey is certainly one of them.

Today, the actor is one of the most sought-after in the competitive Hindi film industry. After a spate of successful films like Khosla Ka Ghosla, Traffic Signal, Pyaar Ke Side Effects and Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd, Shorey takes a step ahead to stardom with a lead role in Rajat Kapoor’s Mithya. “My last few films did quite well,” says Shorey. “But I am not taking success too seriously. I try to stay as level-headed as I can as far as my films are concerned.”

In Mithya, Shorey, paired with Neha Dhupia, will be seen as a struggling small-town actor who wants to make it big in the movies. “It’s by far the most complicated character I have played so far,” says Shorey who also featured in Kapoor’s last film Mixed Doubles. While the XX-year-old has his hands full with films like Teesri Manzil, I Am 24 and Siingh Is King, what’s making news is his next movie Ugli Aur Pagli, where he is cast opposite the siren Mallika Sherawat.

“It’s a whacky comedy,” he says. “And I am playing an engineering student who prefers to extend his years in college.” When it comes to his heroine, the actor, predictably, has nothing interesting to share.

The filmdom’s big production houses may have come knocking his door, but Shorey makes sure to have his feet still firmly on ground. “For an actor it’s only the script and the director that matters most. The banner hardly makes any difference,” he says.

Recently, Shorey also appeared on Sab TV’s Ranvir, Vinay Aur Kaun? which didn’t quite succeed. But the actor is still open to television. “I am busy with films till the end of this year. After that, I expect to act in television shows if something interesting comes up,” he says.

No matter how busy is his schedule, he even promises to make time for theatre in the sequel of Kapoor’s C for Clown sometime this year.

Humour has become an integral part of his onscreen persona, but off screen Shorey is rather serious. Especially, if the discussion digresses to girlfriend Konkona SenSharma. “I have nothing to say on this,” he signs off.
