Chandigarh Contrary to the claim of the Haryana Government of keeping the law and order situation under control, rape cases in the state have been going up. According to police records, rape cases increased by as much as 25 per cent during 2008, as compared to the previous year.

The National Capital Region (NCR) had the worst crime record in all respects, compared to the rest of the state. Interestingly, in a number of rape cases, policemen were involved, putting

the government through much embarrassment.

As many as 592 cases of rape were registered in the state till November 2008, as compared to 471 cases during the corresponding period the previous year. The number of murders committed in the state during 2008 was 843, slightly lower than 845 the previous year. The number of culpable homicides registered during 2008 was 83, compared to 57 in 2007. The number of cases registered for attempts to murder, too, rose from 549 in 2007 to 558 in 2008.

The number of cases pertaining to assault on government servants saw an increase too. These cases stood at 531 in 2008, compared to 515 earlier. But the number of people hurt during scuffles registered a minor decline, from 4,250 cases in 2007 to 4,234 cases in 2008. As

many as 794 cases of abduction of children were reported in the state in 2008. The number stood at 720 the previous year.

The officials, however, claim the police have worked hard to instill a sense of security in people, by keeping a check on criminals on one hand, and ensuring registration of complaints on the other. As many as 50,580 cases were registered in the state under the Indian Penal Code in 2008. This was 6.99 per cent more than the cases during 2007. Around 20,608 cases were registered under local and special laws, registering an increase of 13.19 per cent, according to police sources.

The number of dacoity cases in the state reduced from 134 in 2007 to 113 in 2008. The number of burglary cases remained almost

the same in the last two years, but robbery cases went up to 492 from 457 in 2007.

The number of theft cases increased substantially from 9,907 in 2007, to 11,433 cases last year. The police claimed a number of such cases had been solved.

The state police claimed to have arrested 327 gangs, and recovered stolen property worth Rs 1,032.48 lakh.
