New Delhi Police forces of Haryana and Delhi have joined hands to investigate threat calls made to prominent businessmen of East Delhi and a top officer of the Haryana Police. Personnel of the two police forces met at a house in Meerut where they had come trying to trace their suspect.

On January 16, the Superintendent of Police (Ambala Cantonment), Bharti Arora, got a threat call. The caller claimed he was from the Lashkar-e-Tayeba and asked her to drop her investigations of the Samjhauta Express blasts of February 2006.

“The caller asked her to beware and threatened to harm her husband, Vikas Arora, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Yamuna Nagar,” a senior police official said.

Bharti confirmed the news and said, “I informed the Superintendent of Police (Ambala) about the call and they are investigating the case.”

After registering a complaint, Ambala Police put the number on surveillance. They traced the call to a Meerut-based house and when they reached they found that the Special Staff of East Delhi were also there.

Vinod Gupta who owns two jewellery shops — in Preet Vihar and Defence Colony — received a call from a man who identified himself as a member of the Mumbai-based D-company and demanded Rs 30 lakh as protection money.

A case had been registered with the Preet Vihar Police Station and the Special Staff had put the number on surveillance.

Earlier, three major businessmen in East Delhi had received extortion calls from a man who claimed to be underworld don Babloo Srivastava.

Sources in East Delhi Police said that the phone numbers used to make these calls also were traced to the same person in Meerut.
