Haryana employs 9,800 safai karamcharis

Chandigarh The government has employed over 9,800 safai karmacharis in the villages of Haryana to improve sanitation conditions and quality of life in rural areas.

A spokesperson of the Development and Panchayats Department said the sanitation workers will be paid a remuneration of Rs 3,525 per month. An amount of Rs 44 crore has been earmarked for 2008-09 and Rs 48 crore has been proposed for 2009-10.

He said a sanitation campaign has also been implemented in the state.

Under the programme, individual toilets, women sanitary complexes, school toilets, anganwari toilets, rural sanitary marts and a production centre are being constructed.

The state government has also constituted a Haryana Rural Development Authority (HRDA) on the pattern of Haryana Urban Development Authority to provide basic amenities and residential facilities in the villages.

An amount of Rs 25.10 crore had been earmarked for HRDA for 2008-09.
