While stating this here today, a spokesman of the Federation said during 2008-09, the average per day milk procurement is expected to be 5.25 lakh litres. The single day milk procurement touched an all time high 9.45 lakh litres on December 29, 2008 against the previous high of 8.61litres. The average milk procured during 2007-08 was 5.14 lakh litres of milk per day. The average per litre milk price of Rs 17.55 was paid to the milk producers up to December 31, 2008 as against Rs 16.44 during the corresponding period last year.
The Federation is planning to provide automatic milk collection units to 1,500 village level societies during the next three years. Milk weight and fat is measured instantly, in a transparent manner, in automatic milk collection units. At present, 610 village level societies already have such units. Similarly, bulk milk coolers would also be provided to milk producer societies, catering to a cluster of 10 to 15 villages, he added.
An insurance scheme has also been launched for the benefit of the members of the village level dairy cooperatives. Under the scheme, a committed member who has supplied milk continuously for the last three years both in lean and flush season, will be insured for Rs 1 lakh for accidental death by paying Rs 10 per annum as premium. The balance premium will be paid by the federation and milk unions. About 40,000 milk farmers will be covered under the scheme, he added.
