Ahmedabad The Chemical Engineering Department of Institute of Technology, Nirma University, has made a hat-trick by bagging the ISTE-IPCL award for the third consecutive year.

The annual award is given by the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), New Delhi for the best M Tech thesis in chemical engineering in India and gets nomination from all over the country, including the IITs and NITs.

It carries a cash prize of Rs 10,000, a medallion and a certificate to both the student and the guide.

The institute, which won the award in 2006 and 2007 as well, bagged it in 2008 for the thesis ‘Study on Photocatalytic Degradation of Nitro and Amino Groups containing compounds, using UV-VIS Spectroscopy and Multivariate Methods’.

It was submitted by Nilofer Lakhani of the Chemical Engineering Department.

The work focused on removal of toxic organic components employing Photocatalytic technique.

The research was done at the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI), Bhavnagar under the guidance of Prof N Subrahmanyam (Nirma University) and Dr R V Jasra (CSMCRI).

Stressing this is the perfect case of industry-academia synergy, Prof A P Vyas, Head of Chemical Engineering Department, said: “The findings will be very useful for the Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) in particular, as the CETPs mainly produce a mixture of toxic compounds. How this toxic mixture can be converted into organic compounds using photocatalytic degradation is the main focus of the thesis.”
