Every month, Anu Malhotra dresses up her five-month-old son and drives down to Celebrity Kids Portrait Studio at New Friends Colony. It is a ritual that the 30-year-old doting mother has followed ever since she has had Vihaan. The child gets properly pampered at the studio, provided with toys and even costume, and as he laughs, smirks and plays, the photographer starts clicking. It takes almost an hour for the perfect moment to be digitalised for the “First Year” portfolio that Malhotra so wants at the end of 12 months. “Portrait photography can capture moments that one can’t at home. Besides, it’s a good outing for my baby,” smiles Malhotra, who doesn’t mind the bill of about Rs 2,000 that she is handed at the end of each session.

The US-based Celebrity Kids Portrait Studio (CKPS), which opened outlets at New Friends Colony and Naraina last year, and StarShots at Select Citywalk, Saket, specialise in portrait photography, which the city is slowly getting hooked to. “India is in a crazy art mood and through portrait photography we are creating personalised art,” says Radhika Shrivastava, Delhi franchisee of CKPS. While it provides “Hollywood-style” costume and hairdo, its photographers spend time with the children and even their family to get to know their likes and dislikes. “We capture natural moments,” says 32-year-old Shrivastava. While CKPS’ entry package, the Petite Collection, is priced at Rs 2,500, its Gold Collection comprises up to seven pictures and comes to Rs 5,500. Up to 15 family members can also come into these pictures.

StarShots, a chicly done studio on the second floor of Select Citywalk, goes for the glam look. The shots are taken under bright lights — and with make-up and hairstyling done at the studio to give a complete makeover. When one girl came asking for the “Manhattan look”, she was provided with a Sex and the City look, complete with a jacket courtesy of the store.

“We want to make the person feel like a star in a shot,” says Surabhi Sawhney, the 30-something director of StarShots. “Portrait photography has been a foreign concept but the trend has picked up here.” The package starts at Rs 2,000. And if portraits in a studio aren’t good enough, then customised shoots are done at locations of your choice for Rs 20,000 upwards. And if you want portraits engraved inside a crystal, that will be done too — for anything between Rs 600 and Rs 30,000.
