The court pronounced the adjournment order on a request from senior advocate S V Raju, who is representing the two.

Raju submitted before the court that he needed time to go through the notices issued regarding the cancellation of his client’s bail.

The Ahmedabad Additional Sessions Judge had granted anticipatory bail to Kodnani and Patel on February 5.

The petition seeking cancellation of the bail was filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Naroda Patia and Naroda Gam massacre cases of the 2002 riots. They are among the 10 most heinous riot cases being probed by the SIT at the behest of the Supreme Court.

In its petition, the SIT stated that Kodnani and Patel had led the mobs attacking the Muslims in the two areas on February 28, 2002. It pleaded that since the act was heinous and amounted to a criminal offence, the anticipatory bail of the accused be cancelled.

Kodnani has been accused in the Naroda Patia and Naroda Gam cases, while Patel is an accused only in the latter. A total of 95 people were killed and 38 injured in the Naroda Patia case.

The corresponding figures for the Naroda Gam case is 11 killed and nine injured. Three persons are also reported missing in the Naroda Patia case.

Earlier on February 20, Justice Anant S Dave had refused to hear the case saying “not before me”.
