Ahmedabad The Gujarat High Court has issued notices to five self-financed medical colleges in the state following a petition filed by the Parents’ Association- Medical, Dental and Paramedical Studies, Gujarat, on Friday. The association had filed a petition pointing out violation of rules in levying fees this year.

The petitioners pleaded that the fees levied this year should be considered as ad hoc and a new fee structure should be formulated at the earliest. The Division Bench comprising Chief Justice K S Radhakrishnan and Justice Akil Kureshi also issued notice to the state government, fee regulatory committee.

The five self-financed colleges are NHL Medical College in Ahmedabad, Kesar Sal Medical College, Pramukhswami Medical College, Surat Municipal Medical College and C U Shah Medical College.

Eight months have passed since the new academic session started; still the new fee regulatory committee has not fixed any fee criteria, while the self-financed colleges continue levying fee as per the previous norms.

The counsel for the association, Anand Yagnik, pointed out that the state government had constituted rules in May 2008 for fee structure in the self-financed educational institutes.

Accordingly, all previous rules, statutes and recommendations before the May 2008 statute are invalid. But the regulatory committee has yet not specified the fee structure.
