The directions were issued by a Division Bench, headed by Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur, in response to a public interest litigation demanding action against the rice shellers on the Nabha road in Patiala. The petitioner submitted that the Punjab government officials had connived with the owners of shellers to relax the norms and allow them to come up illegally.
It was also averred that the District Town Planner had given a false no objection certificate to set up the rice shellers.
The sheller, as per the guidelines, has to be set up at a distance of 500 metres from the scheduled road and village population. In this case, however, the distance is very less, claimed the petitioner.
