Kolkata The Calcutta High Court today directed the Central and state governments to ensure the proper use of the National Emblem in the state.

Delivering an order, a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Mohit S Shah and Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta said the government should take action against the improper use of the National Emblem in accordance with legal provisions.

Kamal Dey, editor of a Bengali journal, had filed a PIL in December 2008 seeking the intervention of the High Court to stop the improper use of the Emblem.

In his petition, Dey alleged that the words Satyameva Jayate, which should be written under the Ashoka Pillar, were found missing from signboards of government offices and stamp papers also. He also alleged that various government officers used the National Emblem in their vehicles though they were not authorised to do so.

The HC had passed several interim orders in 2009 and January 2010 to stop the improper use of the National Emblem.

Dey today presented a few text books recommended by the West Bengal Secondary Education, and pointed out that the words Satyameva Jayate were missing from the National Emblem in these books.
