Kolkata A Division Bench headed by the acting Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya today directed the Register General of the High Court to insert the word Satyamewa Jayate under the Ashoka Pillar of the seals used by court for official work.

Advocate Tapash Bhanja brought it to the notice of the Bench that Satyamewa Jayate is still missing from Ashoka Pillar of the seals. The Bench has now asked Register General Tarun Kanti Gupta to restore the word.

The same Bench had directed Gupta to replace the chair of the Chief Justice during the hearing on November 21 as the word Satyamewa Jayate was missing under the Ashoka Pillar.

The Bench has now also asked the Register General to stop the improper use of the national emblem in the Calcutta High Court.

The same Bench had also directed the National Informatics Centre (NIC) Friday last to insert the word Satyamewa Jayate under the Ashoka Pillar on the website of Calcutta High Court. The NIC inserted the word within 12 hours. Today, the Bench wondered why the word is missing in the seals of the High Court.

Kamal Dey, the editor of a Bengali journal, had filed a PIL on the improper use of the national emblem across the state and the case came up for hearing today.

Bhanja moved the plea that the district judge of the South 24-Parganas at Alipore used national emblem without the word Satyamewa Jayate in front of his vehicles. He also placed the photograph of the vehicle used by the district judge.

After the hearing, the Bench held that no district judge can use the national emblem in his vehicles and asked the district judge of the South 24-Parganas to remove it from his vehicles.
