So, don’t be surprised if a stray kite, which reads “Modi is Grat” (Great), lands on your windowsill. For, many such kites with Modi’s face and lotus printed on them are dominating Gujarat’s skyline.
For kitemakers, however, it’s simply business. “Every year, we do something new on the kites,” said Hanif Gangresh, a kite manufacturer and wholesaler at Jamalpur.
“When Modi came back with such a thumping majority this time around, we decided to print his face on the kites,” he added.
It doesn’t end here. “We are also making a 30-feet kite with Modi’s image, which we intend to gift him during the kite festival, Uttarayan,” said Hanif. He said that while Modi kites were first introduced in the market as a free gift for customers, they have started getting huge demands for them now.
“The idea has generated a good response,” said Hanif. We are selling 100 such kites for Rs 200 and there is a considerable demand for them,” said Shoeb Patangwala, another kite seller in Jamalpur.
People aren’t complaining. “I have always liked Modi,” said Himanshu Antapurkar, a kite enthusiast from Pladi. “I have already bought 50 kites, a number of which I have distributed among my friends and relatives as well,” he said. “This will be a great way of honouring Modi for all the work he has done for the state,” he added.
