Ludhiana, March 6 To celebrate women power, an artist from the city has created a wax statue of Kalpana Chawla to send across a message that girls do have an equal right to live. The statue will be unveiled on the International Women's Day on March 8.

Chander Shekhar Prabhakar has put his art on display at Hardy's World near Laddowal. He had been working on the statue for the last three months. He says, "Female foeticide is on the rise in our state. This is not only criminal but a threat to our culture which will have irreparable ramifications."

Shekhar started dabbling with sculptures nearly five years ago after he got inspiration from Madame Tussaud's museum in London. Today, he has about 25 wax statues to his credit. The includes names like Mahatma Gandhi, JL Nehru, Mohd Rafi, APJ Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, among others.

"I only want people to understand that daughters are the most precious gift of god. They are the ones who light our lives. Kalpana showed the world that one could scale giddy heights, if one has the perseverance and determination to do it. Today, all the countrymen are proud of her as she brought glory to our country."

Even Kalpana's father showed concerned over the ever-widening gap in the sex ratio in Punjab and Haryana. "The fact that people in these states are killing their daughters worries me to no end. I wonder how they could do this to their daughters who have the potential to become Kalpanas of tomorrow. I visited various institutions in Punjab and told people that Kalpana was from amongst these daughters only," said Kalpana's father BL Chawla, while speaking to Newsline over phone.

"I am sure there would be girls who will do us proud tomorrow but killing them in a womb is more than a just a crime. How could a mother allow this to happen? This is directly against our social ethos. Look at the Vedic age, then women were worshipped like goddesses,' he added.
