Taking a strong note of the issue, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued notices to Sonam in the Kansal land-grab case. During the resumed hearing on Friday, the Punjab Law Officer said Sonam admitted to purchasing land in Kansal and selling it off later. He does not own any land in Kansal at present, it was stated. The law officer said though Sonam signed the initial affidavit, he did not know the contents of it.
“Either he thinks he is too naive or that this Division Bench is too naive. How will Sonam explain the earlier affidavits filed by him in which he had clearly denied that he does not own any land in Kansal,” said Justice Mahesh Grover. On the other hand, Advocate Navkiran Singh said, “Sonam has not denied that he has signed the affidavit. He is just trying to wriggle out of this.”
Mohanjeet Kaur, daughter-in-law of Puran Singh, the complainant in the case, had produced an affidavit signed by Sonam, in which he had clearly stated that he does not own any property in Kansal. Later, during interrogation, Sonam said he had indeed purchased and sold off land in Kansal but did not own any land at present. The court, on the last date of hearing, had sought explanation regarding the affidavit produced on record by Mohanjeet.
Notices have also been issued to Mohanjeet Kaur. Expressing strong disapproval on the advocate representing Kaur, Chief Justice Vijender Kumar Jain remarked, “This means your client has produced a wrong affidavit on record. By this affidavit, you have tried to obstruct the legal system.”
