Chandigarh, March 7 In order to facilitate eradication of child labour from the city, the administration has decided to assign power of labour inspectors to the heads of government schools.

Krishna Mohan, UT Home and Labour Secretary said the step has been taken to effectively bring to an end the practice of child labour.

Since the Labour Department of the Administration does not have requisite staff to check child labour, therefore, principals and headmasters of government schools have been assigned with the power of labour inspector.

A notification to this effect has also been issued.

As many as 947 children between the age group of 6-14 years were found engaged in different activities in Chandigarh and these children are covered under Child Labour Act 1986. The children are not attending schools because of financial constrains and were exploited.

Earlier, the UT Education Department had announced that the children between the age group of 6-14 years, who are working in the city and not studying, would be given incentives including free books, uniform, mid-day meal and Rs 250 per month.
