Vadodara In December last year, 19 teachers from the Baroda Medical College (BMC) were sent on deputation to Jamnagar to cover up vacant posts in the medical college there. Yet again, the state Health department has sent a standing instruction to transfer 49 teachers to Surat, Bhavnagar and Rajkot for the forthcoming inspection by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

The third renewal inspection on increment in medical seats at Surat, Rajkot and Bhavnagar medical colleges will have the MCI in these colleges in March.

In order to show the teaching staff in full strength, the Health department has sent a standing instruction on Wednesday to BMC pointing out the list of teachers to be deputed.

Incidentally, the list also includes a professor from the paediatric ward who is pregnant.

“The department would, of course, not know about the situation of teachers here. We will arrange for someone else to go in her place. But with the rate of transfers, I think we should now stop unpacking our bags," said a senior professor at the BMC.

Sources said a list of as many as 49 teachers has been sent by the department to be sent on deputation to the other three medical colleges in the state.

The dean of the college refused to confirm the figures or divulge any information on the deputation. "We are in talks with the department. Nothing is confirmed yet," said AT Leuva, Dean, BMC.
