* Delhi has two beds per thousand people. The city has never achieved WHO’s prescribed norm of five beds per 1,000 people
* The total number of hospital beds in the city in 1987 were 18,351. In 2006, the number went up to 33,278. More than a third of that — 12,349 beds— were in the private sector.
* According to a recent industry survey conducted by ASSOCHA, Delhi faces a shortage of 12,500 doctor, with merely 5,500 doctors for a population of over 10 million people.
* Medical institutions like the AIIMS produce nearly 100 qualified doctors every year, while Delhi government colleges like the Maulana Azad Medical College produce 180. Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) and Safdarjung Hospital churn out 100 doctors each year.
* As far as ambulances are concerned, the city is planning to acquire new fully-loaded Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulances to have a total count 480 ambulances by the 2010 Commonwealth Games. As of now, Delhi has 135 CATS ambulances.
